Software program development
The best business accounting software is available from the regular online stores or from the software developers. Companies such as Sage have been at the forefront of the development of business accounting software from the very beginning and they have branched out into other forms of business software programs.
They still produce the programs which cover the basics of finance in business, but they also have specific industries in mind. In the pure mathematical formula aspect the user can work out the simplest accounting procedures, through to things such as a complicated monthly payroll, and estimating. This is useful for the sole trader, and anyone who finds the whole business of accounting rather daunting.
To get things like tax revues completed, and the books prepared for tax inspection, these business accounting software programs are ideal. For the professional they are simply tools of the trade and where as at one time the accounts manager would have to sit and manually add everything up, these programs do it all, and workout all the elements.
They are great for business plans and projects. In the construction industry the programs will give financial estimates of projects, and if there are time delays and over runs, the likely costs of those problems. That gives the contractor a much better base to work from when it comes to meeting the client.
The type of jobs where a business accounting software program would be used would be in a financial institution such as a bank, a company accounts department, or as a ‘one man band’ accounts service. All promise good steady careers, and with knowledge of all the latest developments in new business accounting software can lead to a promising career.
Hard graft for three years
Being an accountant is a profession which requires hard graft, but not any particular skills in the arts or engineering sense. It’s a head down industry which is steady, pays a reasonable income and will provide the nearest thing to a ‘job for life’ with a banking institution. It attracts a certain type of character who is could be described as ‘Steady Eddy”
So getting the good degree is the next step and with hard work there is absolutely no reason why that qualification cannot be achieved. The work is straightforward and although there are new areas of work such as learning all the new business accounting software packages, the rest is logical and organised.
That is half of what being an accountant is all about. The ability to take a set of figures and systematically record and calculate. Of course the computer can do this on all sorts of file systems, so using the business accounting software will become second nature after a while.
The University ‘Milk Round’
After University comes the troublesome task of getting a job. The very brightest students will have been ‘cherry picked on the milk round’. That expression means that the companies looking for the best talent will attend job and career days where students can introduce themselves as prospective employees. It’s a guarantee that the top university ‘Firsts’ will be snapped up right away, leaving the rest to ponder their future.
But accountancy is not at the top of many career lists, so there is less competition. The other good news is that every company of any size has an accounts department and this is where the decent but not outstanding graduate may find a job. The alternative is to find a small accountancy business who needs an extra hand and the third option is to go for broke and open a freelance accounting business. The need for some track record and membership of the main trade associations means that last option could be a struggle. Companies have their confidentiality concerns so any new business without a good background would be a gamble for them.
Using the software as a daily tool
Getting a job with a company would be the best option and there are jobs with banks which start at a low level, but offer progress with good reports. This is the ‘job for life’ we talked about. It’s not terribly exciting, and there is little in the way of creativity for the more ambitious career accountant. But it provides a solid base from which the accountant can build on. Having the practical experience of using the business accounting software in real situations is very different from practicing it in the University study. Getting the right business accounting software is important, but that can be the main selling point. From then on it is more hard graft, and more nights in front of the Excel spreadsheets.
